Brother, that means an enormous amount coming from you, especially since you've only seen it digitally. It's an entirely different beast in print.

Thank you, brother! I'm so excited for people to read it as it was intended, in glorious print format. Great chopping it up with you last week!

No one will care about this, but Hugh Thomas' work has always fascinated me because his own political affiliations shifted throughout his career, including a stint backing the Contras alongside Reagan and then a mid-90s conversion to liberal centrism. Is this good or bad? Who cares! What it tells me is that this is (I was going to write "was," but he's still alive) a historian/politician capable of getting inside the heads of all the people about whom he wrote.

This comment made my day. I'll talk about this more next week but I think Thomas' shifting allegiances made him particularly well suited to dig into the Spanish Civil War, a complex conflict with at least a half dozen distinct sides, all informed by drastically different political philosophies.

You definitely should. I've got a similar fascination with Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Characters like that - people capable of being internal to numerous perspectives over the course of their careers - might not always please supporters or fans, but they can certainly help more charitable folks understand why others might have thought the way they did (valuable for this project, for sure, but also for...life).
